Helmet Guide 2025/2026

As you would expect from such an technological and forward looking sport, nothing stays still for long in motorsport. In 2025 new FIA helmet homologation was introduced, FIA8859-2024, this standard is required for some levels of motorsport. But what does it mean for the club racer or the semi professional?

Lets start with the new FIA 8859-2024 specification.

An evolution of the 8859-2015 this new homologation has a number of improvements vs the older spec. All of these elements are part of the constant search for increased safety for drivers around the world.

14% improved energy management in the event of an impact, 5% improved energy impact resistance. There are also alterations to the visor locking mechanism and revised testing for objects penetrating the visor. All of these are positive improvements and will be standard on most helmets in the next 5 to 10 years. Broadly speaking SA2025 from the Snell Memorial Foundation is the equivalent to 8859-2025. Snell is another testing a certification body for helmets, often more widely used in America. Their certification is recognised by MSUK and can be used in many UK Motorsport events.

The main focus for the latest homologation is open wheel racing where the drivers head is exposed to flying debris and impact from foreign objects. For those in open top cars we recommend the most up to date homologation possible due to these factors, but for closed cockpit racers they will be happy with a open or closed face helmet of SA2015 or 8859-2015 spec.

Most club or semi professional racers won’t be upgrading to an 8859-2024 spec helmet any time soon, so what is valid for UK motorsport? It’s worth saying that helmets are increasingly required, Santa Pod recently announced they are increasing the use of helmets at their events. So most events, drag, drift, race, rally and more will need a helmet. It is worth buying the best helmet your budget will allow, not only will you be safer the homologation will likely last longer.

The oldest homologation to currently have no expiry is 8859-2015 and SA2015, any older homologations would be ineligible for many MSUK events. This means SA2010, FIA 8858-2002, 8858-2010 would not pass scrutineering and be rejected.
