Interview With…….Will Gibson
Will Gibson has followed a path few racing drivers do, going from racing driver to series owner. And not just any series, but the highly competitive, well supported and BTCC package featured Legends Championship. We talk about his inspirations and how life’s changed in 2026!
Question 1 - Who are you and what do you race? - Will Gibson, Legends Cars for the last 13 years, although now my time racing Legends Cars in the UK has come to end, since buying and taking over the series. I now will only race Legends Cars in America at events like the World Finals.
I also do the odd race in other series like the C1 endurance series. I have raced in the last couple of UK 24hour races with the WRC Developments team run by Clive Brookson and Dave Drinkwater who are both friends dating back to my BMW Compact Cup days.
Question 2 - What got you into motorsport? - A father that had a massive love for motorsport and vehicles. We used to go as a family to Brands Hatch regularly to watch. I have therefore had a love for motorsport since I was very young.
Question 3 - What is your dream car, track and era combination and why? - Porsche 917 is my dream car, in Gulf colours like Steve McQueen’s Le Mans movie. So would have to be be the Porsche 917 at Le Mans in 1970/1971. When I first saw that film it captivated me and I’ve loved that car ever since. Le Mans as well has a very special place in my heart to.
Question 4 - At the start of the season you took on a bigger role in UK Legends racing. How has your race weekend changed from being 'just' a racing driver? - It is a lot busier that’s for sure! We are 3/4 of the way through the year and I’m getting to grips with it now. The biggest bit now is I have 20+ drivers that are customers and I have to try and keep them happy whilst they are competing in a very competitive series. I still get to go track in the two-seater Legends which is really cool, we take drivers guests, sponsors or family out for a lap before each race. It’s nice to give something back to the drivers.
Question 5 - What do you wish someone had told you before you started racing? - How expensive and addictive it is! It wouldn’t stop me from doing it all again, but at least a heads up would be nice.
Question 6 - What's your favourite Rocked-IT product and why? - The kit bag! I plan to be using one when I head over to Las Vegas for the World Finals this year in November.
Question 7 - Motorsport looks like an individual sport but it requires a team behind you. Who deserves a special mention? - I dedicated my two Legends Championships to my brother Tim who passed away in 2015. Without him I don’t think I would have ever raced, he had the push and drive to want to do it. I’m always grateful for the time I had with him as I wouldn’t be half the person I am without him. He was an inspiration to many and is always missed.
My father for all the support and advice he’s given, my wife who always encourages me to race and has always supported me. Scott and Den that have been watching, helping and making memories virtually since my first car race. The whole Knowles family for their support and help especially over the last few years. And also the Legends Cars paddock, from our scrutineers to our media man, from Richard John Neil to George, our photographer, they’ve all helped shape my motorsport life and make racing a pleasure. The last thank you is to Phil Cooper and Simon Belcher for keeping Legends Cars going for 30+ years, the series is like no other and the cars really are amazing to drive! So thank you all.
